Internship Recruiting Best Practices

Professional experience gives you an edge in the admissions process and in career recruiting. Candidates aiming for a “vocational masters” (like business school, law school, or a public policy program) should aim for internships in their field. Internships are important because they demonstrate that an applicant is experienced and able to contribute in a professional environment.

In this post, I’ll share some ideas for how to effectively pursue internship opportunities.

  1. It is important to set goals for your internship. What industry am I targeting? Am I particularly attracted to any firms or organizations? What am I aiming to learn through the experience? Answering these questions for yourself will bring needed clarity as you begin searching for the right opportunities.
  2. Once you’ve identified your goals it’s time to prepare a polished CV. Your CV is a one-page document that showcases your experiences, skills, and education. Human Resource officers (just like admissions officers) will usually spend just 30 seconds reading a CV so it’s vital that you highlight your accomplishments and qualifications.
  3. A tailored cover letter that clearly explains your interest in the firm and what you can contribute is also vital. Prospective employers want to see an enthusiastic applicant that can bring real value to the company. Your cover letter should explain why you are excited to be considered for the role, what you hope to contribute and learn from the opportunity.
  4. Once equipped with these tools, you’re ready to begin recruiting in earnest. We must remember that people give people jobs and they like to work with people they like and trust. Be polite and confident as you meet representatives at career fairs and information sessions. Follow-up with an email to the recruiters you meet, thanking them for their time and insight.

Searching for an internship can be quite stressful but it all goes back to the basics. Brainstorm your goals for the experience and then prepare your CV and cover letter. As you meet recruiters, demonstrate that you will be a valuable member of the office and you’ll receive an invitation to interview before you know it.

Key Spring Tasks


First, it’s essential that you continue building the proper foundation through academic achievement and excellence in standardized testing. The first thing admissions committees will look at is your academic transcript. Only candidates with strong grades will be considered for offers. Next, admissions officers will look at your standardized test scores. This includes the GRE (for most graduate programs) or GMAT (for business schools) along with the TOEFL (for American universities) or IETLS (for British universities) to test English competency. Admissions committees will only grant offers to students that have demonstrated the ability to do high-level work; your transcript and test scores represent your intelligence and diligence to universities. That said, even a 4.0 GPA, 800 GMAT, 120 TOEFL does not guarantee admission to Harvard Business School. At elite universities, your academic qualifications enable you to be seriously considered but it is other, “intangible” factors that actually earn admission. Let’s discuss how you can build your “intangibles” this spring.


After evaluating your transcript and test scores, the admissions committee is likely to judge the quality of your two recommendations so it’s crucial you invest time this spring to bolster your recs. The best way to earn great recommendations is to build close working relationships with your professors. How do you build relationships with professors? Do reading and homework before lecture, listen actively during class, and ask a smart question after the class period ends. This enables you to strike up a conversation with your professor and gradually build a positive relationship. Share that you are aiming to study abroad and ask your professor for any advice. Always be respectful of their time and be sure to follow-up with an email or handwritten note expressing your gratitude for their time and advice. After several conversations, your professor will likely be able to write you a strong recommendation letter that speaks on your academic merits, personality, aspirations, and potential. Strong recommendations take time so begin by speaking to two of your favorite professors after class this week.


But academic achievement and excellent recommendations are only the first steps! It is also important to build your professional experiences. This can include internships with private companies, government agencies, or NGO’s to build skills, insights and contacts. Internships are very important for students aiming to attend “professional programs” like business, medical or law school, along with non-research based Masters programs. You should aim to intern in a field related to your academic interest. If you want to get a Masters in Finance, try to work in banking or investments; if you are aiming for a Masters in Public Health, then interning with a health care NGO or government agency is a smart move. Research and laboratory experience is crucial for those aiming to attend research-based Masters or PhD programs. Lab work is also a great way to work closely with a professor and earn a strong recommendation by a faculty member in your target academic field. Research related to your target PhD field is weighted much more favorably than unrelated laboratory experience.


Admissions committees will evaluate candidate’s “real-world” experience, qualifications and contributions after they have determined you can perform at the high academic standard required. Internship and research experience helps set candidates apart in competitive application pools.


This spring you should also begin brainstorming which universities and programs you plan to apply to. Start by thinking of your career goals and how graduate school can help you achieve your aspirations. Don’t worry if you’re not exactly sure how to start making your target university list. How to Get Laboratory Research Experience


Students planning to apply for an “academic masters” (in the humanities or sciences) or a Ph. D. should aim for laboratory or research experience. Laboratory experience shows admissions officers that a candidate has refined understanding and a developed skill set that will be vital to success in further academic research.


In contrast to the structured internship application process, laboratory placement varies in formality. Some professors post research openings and require applications, while others simply invite the top academic performers from their class or rely on personnel recommendations from graduate student members of the lab. Certain best practices should guide your search, no matter the rigor of the selection process.


Many lab leaders prefer to hire only experienced researchers. So how does one get started?

  1. Seek out campus organizations that provide hands-on science opportunities and search for competitions that will give you experience. These projects signal that you are serious about research and will teach you the skills and language associated with your field, helping you to land an interview and impress prospective supervisors.
  2. Learning about the inner-workings of a lab is also vital. Read recently published research from your university and search online for the contributors. Learn about their backgrounds – this can inform and inspire. Ask friends that are employed as Research Assistants about their laboratory work and inquire on potential openings.
  3. Building relationships with your professors is crucial as well. Introduce yourself after class and share your research interests. Ask for advice on courses to take to better prepare for future research. Inquire if they are looking for Research Assistants or if they know of openings on another project (the closer your interests align with the professor’s, the more likely you are to land a slot in their lab). Be enthusiastic because your courage in asking will likely impress your professor.


Finding and seizing the right summer opportunity is all about preparation and taking initiative with a smart strategy. Internships and lab positions go to the diligent candidates that go the extra mile by showcasing how their interests and experiences equip them to do a standout job.

Stand Out with Leadership


Admissions officers are looking for candidates that will add to the campus community. You can stand out by developing leadership skills through your extra-curricular activities. The path to leadership isn’t rocket science – you can get started today!

  1. Get Involved because the world is run by those who show up! Attend information sessions, speak to your active friends, and check out potential clubs online. Mark down the meeting time in your calendar and enlist a buddy to attend with you. It’s more fun with a friend and you are more likely to keep each other accountable.
  2. Plan to Adapt because trying out different activities is key to discovering your true interests and passion. Continue brainstorming on your goals and clarity will come with time. There is no time wasted because the knowledge, skills, and contacts will help open doors later (while helping you build a solid resume in the process).

As a freshman at UChicago, I spent much of my free time participating with the investment club. The experiences helped me land an internship with Merrill Lynch, which gave me the confidence and knowledge to later become an entrepreneur. None of us know where all the twists and turns in the path will lead but we can be confident that our next steps will be fruitful.

  1. Find a Mentor because they can help you navigate the path. They have faced similar challenges and can help you avoid stumbling blocks while pointing out promising opportunities. The President and VP of the UChicago investment club, Elsa and Josh, spent lots of time teaching me about analyzing the economy, picking stocks, and building a portfolio. Our friendship didn’t end when they graduated and both went on to top consulting firms. Elsa and Josh continue to help me with both of my projects, Moneythink and ChaseFuture, serving as helpful advisors as well as wonderful friends and mentors.
  2. Act like a leader by taking on responsibility and being friendly and kind. A fancy title is not required to make a big contribution in your organization. Treat people with respect and be proactive, trying out for opportunities to lead. Share your aspirations with the current leaders – your energy and enthusiasm will demonstrate your potential and create opportunity. This was how I got started in Student Government at UChicago. A few coffee chats changed the direction of my college career by inspiring me to run for President of Student Government, a phenomenal way to build leadership skills. I learned first-hand the importance of getting involved, planning to adapt, finding mentors, and acting like a leader!

Remember that fate favors the bold so we must calculate the risks and take them. We will all experience failure on our journey but that is where we learn the essential lessons of leadership.
